About the fund
Anglian Water is committed to protecting and enhancing the species and habitats on its sites and across the region. As part of this commitment, the company has set up the Anglian Water Invasive Species Fund to make grants to fund projects which prevent the introduction and/or spread of invasive non-native species (INNS), where such projects will prevent the deterioration of a waterbody or reduce the threat to the conservation objectives of wetlands designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest, Special Area of Conservation or Special Protection Area.
Grants between £1,000 and £15,000 will be considered.
Fund criteria
Applications are invited from constituted non-for profit groups with an associated bank account into which funds can be transferred. Local authorities may also apply.
Projects must focus on active control or eradication of INNS that impact aquatic and wetland environments. These projects must fall within one or more of the following named management catchments and the Anglian Water or Hartlepool regions (see maps below).

Check the catchment area
Applicants must demonstrate how the funding will prevent the deterioration of a water body or will help to achieve the stated conservation objectives of wetlands designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest, Special Area of Conservation or Special Protection Area.
The fund will cover:
- The costs of direct control or eradication of INNS e.g. equipment hire to access and remove INNS
- Equipment purchases, such as gloves and rakes
- Biosecurity measures, such as wash down points and signs
- Costs of applying for consents etc.
- Volunteer travel expenses
- Interim and post-intervention surveys, where these are part of a control project
- Staff costs
The fund will not cover:
- Research projects or projects which are predominantly to raise awareness or carry out marketing about INNS
- Apps
- Surveys to demonstrate the need for a grant
- Survey and monitoring which isn’t part of a control programme
Further application guidance
- The Anglian Water Invasive Species Fund will only support projects to control giant hogweed where professional specialists are used. The fund will not support volunteer workers to control/remove giant hogweed.
- Grants can cover up to 100% of project costs. However, the panel may give preference to projects that can illustrate they have begun to raise other funds to implement the project.
- This fund will allow applications from the same group for multiple relevant projects. Similarly the fund will allow multiple applications from the same group for ongoing work on the same project.
- The fund will consider grants for projects of up to 24 months.
- Applications received for the 1st February deadline can expect decisions by the end of May.
- The grant recipient will work with Anglian Water’s media team to publicise the grant award and the benefits it has delivered.
