Urban Uprising received a grant to deliver a climbing coaching programme, in partnership with Galfrid School in Cambridge, for children at risk of exclusion or dealing with other very difficult issues.

Galfrid School in Cambridge serves a community facing high socio-economic deprivation. It has the highest level of free school meals in the region and 54% of pupils have additional needs.

Many young people at Galfrid School face various challenges, including risk of exclusion from school, drug and alcohol problems, anti-social behaviour, and poor mental health. These challenges often result in disengagement from school, home, and social settings. The school identified a pressing need for an initiative that could improve these students’ wellbeing and help them better engage in all aspects of their lives.

Galfrid School partnered with Urban Uprising to implement a climbing programme. It was designed to provide a positive physical outlet for at-risk youth, offer a structured environment for personal growth, and create opportunities for achievement and recognition.

The programme consisted of a 6-week coaching course delivered in small groups by professional climbing instructors. It emphasised personalised goal setting and offered participants the chance to get a certified bouldering award.

The programme was also extended to support young people from Cambridge 4 Ukraine, providing them with a valuable distraction from their worries and an opportunity to connect with peers.

The programme increased confidence and self-esteem, enhanced resilience, and improved problem-solving skills. It also provided valuable opportunities for forming new social connections.

Physical health improvements were equally notable. Participants saw improvements in stamina and strength, as well as improved flexibility and coordination. These physical benefits complemented the mental and emotional gains, contributing to an overall sense of wellbeing among the students.

By offering an engaging, challenging, and supportive environment, Urban Uprising’s climbing programme has successfully provided at-risk youth with a powerful tool for personal growth and wellbeing. This innovative approach demonstrates the potential of physical activities to help address complex social and educational challenges.

I felt scared about climbing because I thought I might fall. I now feel confident about it and I am a lot more active than I was.
